Alex, Octave and maxima are two different things. octive is a numerical (algebraic) system while maxima is a symbolic system. big diff. I’ve tried both but tend to lean towards maxima. but as most of you mentioned, setting it up can be challenging

wxMaxima implements its own math display engine to nicely display maxima output.I can recommand this to everyone to use, ok it’s maybe not for everyone…

Nonsense – of course it works, otherwise people wouldn’t be able to use it. And it is definitely not immature – maybe “elderly”.
If you’re going to complain about a program you need to explain HOW it doesn’t work.

Maxima sounds like a great idea but it really isn’t ready for mainstream. I’ve spent an hour going through all the steps and debug procedures and it doesn’t work. Period. I doubt it would gain many adherents in college due to the fuss to get it to work. Of course, you get what you pay for, but Octave is a much more mature and stable solution.
